A respected worldwide advocate for human rights and acclaimed documentary film executive and producer. Thor Halvorssen is “a champion of the underdog and the powerless,” according to the New York Times. Mr. Halvorssen is an advocate for individuals for 28 years, starting his grassroots initiative in London, England against the forces of apartheid in South Africa.
According to Crunchbase, Born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1976, Thor Halvorssen took to public interest, policy and advocacy on a grander scale when the Venezuelan government detained his Father as a political prisoner.
Determined to see the release of his Father, Mr. Halvorssen established the Human Rights Foundation after his Mother was shot while engaged in a political rally in 2004. Advancing the cause of the Human Rights Foundation, he has spearheaded the drive for tolerance, understanding, democracy and liberation of political prisoners.
The Human Rights Foundation is a multi-prong initiative that asserts itself into human rights cases worldwide, provides substantiated evidence to many commissions and judicial queries and seeks the human treatment of those held captive.
Thor Halvorsssen is an author, as well, of Simón Bolívar and the Enlightenment, University of Pennsylvania, published in 1995. As CEO and founder of the Oslo Freedom Forum, a “spectacular human-rights festival… on its way to becoming a human-rights equivalent of the Davos economic forum”, according to The Economist.
Thor Halvorssen’s career journey includes positions as the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer, Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, 1999 to 2004, currently the President of the Human Rights Foundation, since 2005, Foundation and Executive Producer and Founder of the Moving Picture Institute. He currently serves as the CEO and President of the Oslo Freedom Forum for the past eight years.
He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Arts degrees in Political Science and History.
